Storage Silo Relocation

Sam Cavanaugh and Trapper Wyman, Mansfield Crane Service

Early in 2023, Mansfield Crane Service (MCS) received a call to relocate eight storage silos at a cheese manufacturing facility in Upstate New York. Trapper Wyman, Lift Planner, made multiple site visits to the plant to determine the best possible setup locations and minimum number of crane setup locations using 3D Lift Plan. Like a game of chess, planning for the most strategic moves to optimize efficiency and minimize down-time for a client is the goal of executing and delivering a well-thought-out project using 3D Lift Plan. Challenges such as positioning MCS's 500-ton crane to meet different radius requirements for each lift and keeping silos vertical to minimize risk to insulation were considerations in an overall working plan.

Following the planning and estimation phase, and MCS was awarded the job, Sam Cavanaugh, Lift Plan Drafter, set to work creating multiple drawings to submit to the construction manager and the client. Many revisions were made given the restricted capacity reduction imposed which meant revisiting the drawing-board, so to speak, to figure out how to do as many lifts as possible with the fewest number of moves. The final plan made it possible for the facility to be shut down for only one day during the five-day project. During that time period, the 500-ton crane was moved only four times around the facility.

Before the lift was implemented, Sam's work clearly showed our team the overall plan and the execution of steps and moves anticipated to complete the project. As in the game of chess, adjustments needed to be made on the spot, quickly revised and submitted to 3D Lift Plan. As a result of meticulous planning, flexibility and responsiveness to conditions, all lifts were completed ahead of schedule and without incident.

The pillars of Mansfield Crane Service are Safety, Quality and Production that are held together with Planning and Communication. 3D Lift Plan provides the structure for these elements to work efficiently and reliably to complete a job.
